Student Travel Award

The AMS Organology Study Group Student Travel Award was established in 2024 with the generous support of the American Musical Instrument Society (AMIS), with matching funds from the American Musicological Society’s Study Group Activities Fund, to encourage and enable college and university students to participate in the annual meeting of the American Musicological Society and the activities of the Organology Study Group (OSG). The selection committee welcomes applicants with academic interests in organology and/or other intersections of music and material culture studies.

Presenting a paper at the annual meeting or at the OSG session is not a requirement to apply for the OSG Student Travel Award, but applicants with accepted proposals will be given priority.

The award consists of financial support to offset some of the costs of attending the annual meeting of the American Musicological Society (e.g. travel and lodging) in an amount determined by the selection committee, based upon an itemized estimate of the applicant’s meeting-related expenses, their anticipated support from other sources, and the total number of applications funded by the committee. For recipients who are not already members, the award also includes a complimentary one-year membership in the American Musical Instrument Society.

Eligibility

All applicants must either be:

  1. enrolled as a student in an accredited institution, full or part-time, as of the first day of the scheduled AMS conference, OR
  2. a recent graduate, with their completion of degree dated no more than eight months before the first day of the scheduled AMS conference.

Applicants can receive the OSG Student Travel Award a maximum of three times. Please note that individuals can only receive one financial award per year from the AMS. (If you receive two awards, the Society will only disburse the award of the higher value).
